Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Answer the questions.
1. Where is it celebrated?
2. When is it celebrated?
3. How is it celebrated (3-5 sentences)?
4. What kind of  food is served? Give the names of at least five traditional dishes and main ingredients.
5.  Read the poem "The Pilgrims Came" by Annette Wynne. Who were the Pilgrims? What event does the poem commemorate?

The Pilgrims Came
The Pilgrims came across the sea,
And never thought of you and me;
And yet it's very strange the way
We think of them Thanksgiving Day.
We tell their story old and true
Of how they sailed across the blue,
And found a new land to be free
And built their homes quite near the sea.
The people think that they were sad,
And grave; I'm sure that they were glad -
They made Thanksgiving Day - that's fun -
We thank the Pilgrims every one!

Autumn celebrations

Columbus Day is celebrated as the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in The Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) and National Day in Spain, and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", carving Jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories and watching horror movies.

Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it's always celebrated on November 11th each year.

Remembrance Day also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day (the event it commemorates). It is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918.

Thanksgiving  is a traditional North American holiday, which is a form of harvest festival. The earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida. The traditional "first Thanksgiving" is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.

Holiday's gone

"Summer has come and passed (...)
Wake me up when September ends  (...)"

Wakacje dobiegły końca jednak we wrześniowe popołudnie warto powrócić do nich pamięcią. Powyższy cytat jest fragmentem piosenki. Odszukaj jej tekst, teledysk i wykonawcę. W odpowiedzi zamieść tytuł, wykonawcę i w 2-3 zdaniach napisz o czym jest piosenka. To pierwsze zadanie.

Zapraszam do kreatywnej pracy :)

St Patrick's Day 2014 #IrelandInspires

Watch the film and write down Ireland's strengths and qualities that make this country a great place to be. Think about and write down Poland's strenghts.

St. Patrick's Day - 17th March

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the Irish. He was born about 389 A.D. in Northern Wales, which at that time may have been part of England or Scotland.

Saint Patrick had an adventurous life. He was captured by pirates at the age of 16. The Irish pirates brought him to Ireland. Six years of slavery made him a devoted Christian. He escaped to France and became a monk. In 432, a vision led him to return to Ireland as a missionary bishop. He brought Christianity to Ireland and taught there for 29 years. He used the shamrock, a 3 leaf clover, (Ireland's national flower) to explain the Blessed Trinity. St. Patrick founded 365 churches, baptized over 120,000 people and consecrated 450 bishops.

Many tales sprung up about this popular saint. One of the most popular legends was how he charmed all the snakes of Ireland down to the seashore to be drowned by the water. The only certain writings of St. Patrick's are his Confessions and a letter written to a man named Coroticus (See Tripartite Life of St. Patrick by Stokes and Lives by Todd, Healy, Bury and Lusack.). His Confessions are written in crude Latin.

According to some Irish writings, St. Patrick died on March 17, 461 A.D. The anniversary of his death is celebrated as St. Patrick's Day. It's interesting to note that the shamrock clover flowers around that time of year.

The first official celebration of St. Patrick's Day in the United States occurred in Morristown, New Jersey in 1780. It was authorized by George Washington.
Today St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by the Irish as well as many Americans with parades, parties, wearing of green and Irish songs. People wear green on this day to represent the lushness of Ireland - The Emerald Isle.
